Researching Graphic Design Websites

I’m currently researching graphic design websites for inspiration (as I’m creating my own) and I came across this one - which actually hurt my eyes. For a graphic designer, this is one of the worst websites I’ve ever seen! Apologies if anyone knows him.

  • Too much going on
  • Too many colours
  • No layout design
  • Confusing
  • No colour scheme
  • Hard to read text
  • Too many images
  • Haven’t a clue what’s going on!

Bleurgh. Hopefully mine will be a lot better than this.

Kinetic Type Update

The latest update for Kinetic Type vid. Ignore the last minute, it’s just composition space. The audio obviously still needs sorting and end the scene needs tweaking. When the Heinz advert ends abruptly I’m thinking of adding a scratched-cd sound effect, so it appears I’ve done it like that on purpose and they have to go to my blog to see the rest.

This is my latest update on my kinetic type video. I cut the composition a bit short when rendering but never mind, you dont miss anything. I changed the background from white crumpled paper and pencils to a plain cream background; which I think looks much simpler and therefore better. I changed the colour scheme from Rainbow to blues, orange, and purple and used the Colour Scheme Designer website for inspiration.

I started from scratch so I could re-do timing, colours, and fonts. I removed the speech bubble and picture as it took attention away from the typography and made it look childish. I also experimented with scale and rotation which I think have worked effectively. All in all I think it looks much better.

To start off the video properly I added my animated logo design, and I’m really pleased with how proffessional it looks. I faded it out so the composition colour isnt as harsh when you first see it.

This is my latest design using the new colour scheme. I’m still not happy with it though so I’m going to scrap it and start again using less colours. My favourite bit in this design (which I’ll be keeping) is the part where the “oo” moves from side to side in the word “look” as if they are moving eyes.

I need to make the video shorter so I’ll speed everything up and remove pointless things like “can you find the best designer?” as theres no need for it to be there, its just a gimmick.

I’m also going to scrap the crumpled paper background as its making the design cluttered.

The first image is my original colour scheme for my kinetic type motion piece. I chose these colours as I thought they worked well with the old colours of my “old-paper” background. I thought by having a textured background it would add some depth to the video and I liked the look of this texture; it looks pirate-y. The second image is my original background.

Something wasn’t quite right with the look of my video and I realised it was the background image. It was making the vid look to… old! And I wanted to appear new and current so I changed my background to a cleaner brighter paper. I chose a crumpled texture to show I dont always go with my first design, I use trial and error. It looked too plain so I found some coloured pencils on Google and added them to the image and lowered the transparency so they dont take any attention away from the text.

It was these pencils that inspired my new colour scheme (final image). I used the eyedropper tool in Illustrator to choose colours directly from the pencils. I feel this new colour scheme is working much better and will upload my latest update on the video shortly. This CS makes the video more fun and entertaining.

Latest update on Kinetic Type video. Not happy with it at all. Think I’ve been looking at it for too long now so I’ll check it again tomorrow.
